Bedwork isn't complicated. Usually you can improve the look of your planted beds with a cultivator and a rake. Take my commercial site as an example.
First, I removed all blackberry shoots, and then, I raked out the bed. Second, I ran my cultivator through the beds. This second steps fluffs-up the soil and uproots all weeds. Once you do this, you're ready to lightly rake over the bed so you can remove the weeds.
The final step is always clean-up: either a quick broom along the edge or a full backpack blow.
That's it. The fluffy, weed-free bed should look great for weeks, especially in January when weeds aren't growing actively.
Note the deep edge for definition.
